ALFAH FEMMES is a six-piece musical collective from Poland, featuring female voice (Zofia Bartos), electric guitar (Marcin Galazka), bass (Przemyslaw Bartos), drums (Tomasz Koper), keys (Michal Wandzilak) and cello (Weronika Kulpa). The band was established in 2018.
The name Alfah Femmes, an obvious nod to Violent Femmes, yet originally deriving from a reference to Dan Kelly and The Alpha Males, explores the relation between sensitivity and harshness while the band itself aims to challenge structures of culturally imposed patterns by transforming them into desperate freedom of expression.
This liberated attitude is reflected not only in the bands actions and presence, but most importantly in their music, which takes from new wave, no wave, and cold wave, but also from art-pop, synth-pop, art-punk, post-punk, post-grunge, as well as general indie and classical genres.
NO NEED TO DIE is the title of Alfah Femmes’ first LP record, which will be released on vinyl (as well as digitally) on Oct 24th, 2020. The album deals with the concept of identity based on a collection of different old pieces of scraps buried in a closet – which parts are to be recovered, and which to be discarded; reclaiming selfhood and its circumstances.
NO NEED TO DIE is also the title track, and last single announcing the full album. That’s why the single’s graphic design directly refers to the album cover planned for the Fall, as well as pertains to the vibe of the song, it being a love confession in the circumstance of different battles, both internal and with the outside world. The musical layer might evoke associations with family adventure movies from the 80s or retro anime soundtracks, but it also hints at 2000s artist-driven dance-pop classics as well as contemporary experimental pop.
