Dolly Spectra is proud to announce the forthcoming release of her music video and single for “Whatcha Gonna Do.” Dolly described the upbeat experimental electronic dance pop song as the soundtrack for “when your blood is boiling, your heart is pumping, and you want to go kick ass and take names.” “Whatcha Gonna Do” can best be described as a cold, maximalist soundscape accented by the creative zeal of Dolly and her co-producer Rees Finley.
The surreal music video powerfully sets the stage for Dolly’s bizarre and strange land where she spills the tea as we are presented with scenes of cartoonish technological antics and visuals. Dolly is portrayed as a mad scientist in an iridescent lab coat as well as a test subject in an orange jumpsuit who busts out of a terrarium with her snake roommate. After some action-packed adventures and absurd situations, the test subject realizes that she has been trapped in a simulation all along. In the video’s final moments, she is shown strapped down receiving shock therapy.
Showcasing Dolly’s unique persona, the music video is chock-full of her impressive acrobatics and colorful expressions. “Whatcha Gonna Do” was edited by Adrian Vega and Dolly’s VFX artist Ben Benjamin both of whom wrangled the visuals out of her mind’s eye and made them a reality.
“‘Whatcha Gonna Do” is an electronic dance pop song born out of the anger and disappointment I experienced when some truly unreliable jerks let me down. It was liberating to write. I hammered out the beat with my drum machine in about 20 minutes and just let this weird scary bitchy rap flow out of me. A lot of what you see in the screwball kung fu acid sci-fi music video is real – I performed all the harness stunts in an aerial studio and later found myself in a nice lady’s home where she put her pet ball python around my neck.” –Dolly Spectra
