Hi Patricia, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been really good! I’ve had a lot more free time lately so that’s really nice.
Out of all the songs out there, why did you choose to cover The Marias’ “I Don’t Know You”?
Well I had put The Marias cover up on YouTube beforehand and everyone really seemed to like it so I just went with that and put it on Spotify. I love the song so I had no problem redoing it like the one I had posted on YouTube.
What was the approach you went after with this song?
I wanted the cover to be as similar to the cover I did on YouTube as possible since that’s what everyone liked so it was very stripped down, just vocals and guitar. The song worked well with that simple approach, it didn’t need anything else in my opinion.
How did you go on balancing the original with your own take?
I just kind of rolled with it, I mean with covers I just kind of go with the flow with how it’s supposed to sound. I didn’t want to add too much to production so I avoided that. I just found the chords and started playing.
The single comes off your new EP Covers EP1 – what made you want to do a whole cover album?
Well it was suggested to me and I thought it was a great idea. Especially since a lot of people in the YouTube comments have suggested it to me as well. I enjoy covering songs so I was more than happy to put a few on Spotify.
What was the selection process on what songs to pay your own rendition?
For the first two I knew I wanted to redo two popular covers off of YouTube and for the two other songs I just picked them cause they are songs I like playing and listening to a lot 🙂
How was the recording and re-writing process?
Different for each song really! For two of the songs I went to my local studio place with Darragh (@astakalapa on instagram :)) to record two of the covers and for the other two, I did those at home since I wanted to add some production to them.
How has the likes of SOAK and Billie Eilish influenced your writing?
They haven’t really, I mean no hate at all but I haven’t gotten into SOAK’s music YET.. YET, I just haven’t gotten around to it but I will since I’ve heard really great things. For Billie, maybe a little but I only really started listening to her recently. I’m more inspired writing wise by Ex:Re, beabadoobee, maybe a little Radiohead but I feel like that resonates more with the music I haven’t put out yet.
As someone who started her career doing covers – do you tend to take a different approach when reinventing an already existent song rather than working on your own original material?
Oh yeah definitely, sometimes I wish I could take the same approach I use for covering a song and use it for writing a song just cause I feel like there is always a better outcome to my covers. I find it hard to step out of the music making bubble, once I start writing I can’t really tell if it’s good or not. I always need to step out and come back to it after some time passes so I can listen from other people’s perspective. With covers everything I need is already there, all I gotta do is see if the song suits my voice, maybe add a few harmonies and production but it doesn’t require the same dedication as writing does. Covering songs is definitely easier, but writing is 100% more fun.
Did you find the inspiration somewhere else for this reimaginations?
I feel like I should have but no not really, I just love these four songs and was inspired by all of them in different ways. All the inspiration I have is from listening to music, the four songs in particular.
What else is happening next in Patricia Lalor’s world?
Hahahahah Patricia Lalor’s world um I finished an original EP and for the first time ever I’m truly proud of the outcome and actually really excited to share it. I recently started home schooling, which is so much better for me. I’m also diving into a new different genre of music to listen to which is very exciting. As much as I love indie sometimes I feel like I’ve listened to all of it, so it’s good to open my mind to some new stuff.
