- Hi Colleen, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thank you! I’m doing fantastic. This is my first interview, I’m excited to be talking to you.
- Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Bloom”?
“Bloom” is my debut single, and first single off of the upcoming EP. It talks about the beginning of a relationship…how sometimes you have to abandon your worries and just go for it. As soon as “Bloom” was written, I knew I wanted it to be the first release. Though it focuses on the blooming of a relationship, it also feels like a testament to the start of Seint Monet’s career.
- Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I am actually not a writer on this song. “Bloom” was written by Camden Mueller, Johnluke Lewis, Mia Shelton, and Miette Hope; all of whom are amazing writers and close friends.
- Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
There MAY be a video in the works…
- How was the recording and writing process?
In February, my manager Matt and I held a songwriting retreat in New Jersey to add some more songs to Seint Monet’s repertoire. “Bloom” was written and produced on the last day within a few hours. It came together very naturally, and the recording process was no different. We didn’t change much while recording the master. Our friend Phil added the mellotron intro as well as a few licks throughout, but otherwise, the demo and master are very similar.
- What was it like to work with Johnluke Lewis and how did that relationship develop?
I could go on for hours about how talented and genuine Johnluke is. I had been living in Nashville for about three years when Matt introduced me to Johnluke. Before meeting him, I found myself having trouble finding a producer. My first session with Johnluke went so well, it was a no brainer to bring him onto the team. In the few months I’ve known him, I’ve grown tremendously as a writer and artist, and feel a million times more confident in myself and my sound.
- How much did he get to influence the song?
Since Johnluke is both a writer and producer on “Bloom”, he had a very strong influence. His production complements the lyrical content of the song so well. When you listen to it, you’ll hear a variety of nature sounds that he added in to support the theme.
- You also wrote the song with him and other group of writers – how did that come to be?
As I mentioned before, though I’m not a writer on this song, it was written at the retreat we held in February. The writers and producers there consisted of a mix from both Nashville and New York. I had already known Johnluke and Camden prior, and Matt knew Mia and Miette.
- What would you say they brought to the table?
Each writer on “Bloom” has such a unique approach to music. Johnluke is an unreal producer and writer. With “Bloom”, he really created something original and special; a fresh take on a modern pop song. Camden’s writing is oftentimes soul-influenced. This helped transform the song from a pure pop vibe to a mix of genres. Miette’s melodies are absolutely killer. She’s able to make a simple melody sound extremely complex. It’s a breath of fresh air. Mia is a lyric wiz. Her ideas are super clever, “Bloom” is no exception. The lyrical content of this song is what ties it all together. It provides such a vivid image that you can almost see the story unfold in your imagination.
- Do you tend to take a different approach when collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?
I’ve noticed that when working by myself, I’m less likely to go back and revise the lyrics and/or melody. That’s why I’m a huge fan of collaborating. When you have more than one person in the room, you’re taking the best ideas from each person, and often, having another perspective will bring ideas out of you that you wouldn’t have thought on your own.
- Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
You can absolutely expect new material! The EP is written, produced, and SO close to being completely mastered. It will feature six songs, three of which are being released as singles. Our creative team has created unreal visuals that will complement each of the singles, along with a music video that we just finished shooting.
- Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The EP will be released late September. The title is still a secret for now 🙂
- Any plans to hit the road?
At the moment, the main focus is introducing Seint Monet to the world and growing my audience. It is my dream to start touring, and I definitely will once venues start holding concerts again. The team and I are going to start experimenting with taking live-streamed concerts to a whole new level for the at-home viewer. Keep on the lookout for that!
- What else is happening next in Seint Monet’s world?
Moving forward, our creative team, consisting of Daniel Chaney, Kathryn Hurtado, and Stephen Marco, has been working endlessly to bring Seint Monet’s brand to life and provide game-changing visuals. We’ve approached Seint Monet as a “universe” consisting of music, art, and fashion. This approach has given us a lot of space to be creative both individually and as a team. In the next few months, we’ll be releasing a variety of visuals and products that showcase our vision.
