Resistance Revival Chorus member Treya Lam shares visuals for her lead single “Wildhearts,” directed by Jason Chew. Wildhearts was filmed at the Sound View in January 2019 back when the quiet of an empty restaurant felt novel and serene. In the recent months the same scene feels haunting with widespread shutdowns throughout restaurants across the country – pushing already vulnerable service workers into deeper uncertainty. In response, Lam partners with One Fair Wage to release the “Wildhearts” video on 5.20.20. Explains Treya, “Wildhearts is a long distance love song that I wrote for my partner who I met while we were both working at a busy oceanside restaurant. I’ve spent half my life working in hospitality and wanted to tell a story that highlights mental health issues in the industry while creating a moment of stillness for the overworked and underpaid members of our society. As a performer and service worker I’ve recently lost nearly all of my income due to recent shutdowns and know that there are millions of people who are facing a similar uncertainty, I’m standing with One Fair Wage to release this film – they’ve been advocating for tipped workers long before the pandemic began.”
One Fair Wage is a national coalition, campaign, and organization seeking to lift millions of tipped and subminimum wage workers nationally out of poverty. Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, the One Fair Wage Emergency Coronavirus Tipped and Service Worker Support Fund provides direct cash assistance to restaurant workers, delivery drivers and other tipped and service workers who were already struggling financially and are bearing the economic brunt of the crisis resulting from the global coronavirus pandemic.
With Good News, Kaki King is excited to introduce Treya Lam, the first artist signing to Kaki’s own label, Short Stuff Records. A classically trained multi-instrumentalist based in Brooklyn, Treya’s debut album, Good News, was produced by Kaki (who also plays multiple instruments throughout the album), and recorded with an all woman and gender nonconforming team of musicians, most notably Catherine Popper (Norah Jones, Jack White, Grace Potter) on upright bass, and mixer Erin Tonkon (David Bowie, Esperanza Spalding). Mastered by Sarah Register, Good News is an instant classic, full of the kind of songwriting and raw talent that has never gone out of style, as well as a message of love, longing. Because as Treya says, “It’s never too late to have a happy childhood.”
